Latest cumulative update includes evidence in this regard

Microsoft is projected to release a new Windows 10 feature update in the spring, and the closer we get to this moment, the more information indicates this won’t be a significant update.

In other words, the upcoming Windows 10 version 21H1 is projected to be just a small release, which means it’ll land in the form of a cumulative update with the focus on under the hood improvements and less on new features.

And while Microsoft hasn’t shared any details in this regard, the company has actually included some evidence in the recently-released Windows 10 cumulative update KB4598291.

As discovered by German site DeskModder, this cumulative update hints at an enablement package for Windows 10 version 21H1, which means this release will be just a small pack of improvements.

Enablement package

Microsoft is using enablement packages to activate features in new Windows 10 releases, as it’s the case with version 20H2.

“The enablement package is a great option for installing a scoped feature update like Windows 10, version 20H2 as it enables an update from version 2004 to version 20H2 with a single restart, reducing update downtime. This enables devices to take advantage of new features now. For version 2004 devices that receive updates directly from Windows Update, devices automatically get the enablement package by installing the feature update to Windows 10, version 20H2,” the company explains.

Needless to say, Windows 10 version 21H1 is currently in the development stage, though given it’s already January, it shouldn’t take too long before Microsoft finalizes it. If the same release calendar is used for this update, Windows 10 version 21H1 is likely to be released to production devices in April or May, with Microsoft to then focus on the major update due in the fall with so many more improvements.
