After much teasing, Adobe finally released today the Adobe Photoshop app for iPad devices, which is available to download for free from the App Store.

Adobe's famous Photoshop software is now finally available for Apple's iPad tablets running the latest iPadOS operating system, and it's compatible with Adobe Photoshop for PC and Mac so you can sync your artwork if you're an Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) subscriber. If not, you can use Adobe Photoshop for iPad as a free 30-day trial.

While missing some key features that are available on PC and Mac, some of which Adobe promises to add in future releases, the first version of Adobe Photoshop for iPad focuses on core compositing and retouching tools, which have been specifically optimized to work with both touch and the Apple Pencil on iPad devices.

"We’re just getting started. For future versions, we're looking at enhancing our tools used for brushes, masks, refining edges, and selecting smart subjects. Plus, we want to make it easier to access your brushes and fonts in Creative Cloud," said Adobe. "If you already have a qualifying Adobe Photoshop monthly membership, just log in and get started."

Supported devices and features

With Adobe Photoshop for iPad, you will be able to work with full PSDs, which will be synced automatically across all your devices, make precision selections with the Lasso and Quick Selection tools, use the paint brush to mask in and out parts of your photos for sophisticated composites, as well as to remove unwanted elements with spot healing and clone stamp.

Advanced selection options like feathering are available as well, along with the Layer stack and Toolbar tools that you're already using on your desktop. The context-aware UI of Adobe Photoshop for iPad allow you to focus on your canvas by displaying only the panes and core tools, not the clutter. The app supports layers as well and doesn't modify the resolution of your PSDs.

As for the supported devices, Adobe Photoshop for iPad works on iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4, iPad 9.7-inch 5th Generation and 6th Generation, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st and 2nd generation), as well as iPad Pro (Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular). It also supports Apple Pencil 1st generation and 2nd generation.

Of course, your iPad must be running iPadOS 13.1 or later as it's not supported on iPad devices running iOS. You can download Adobe Photoshop for iPad for free right now from the App Store, but you'll need to sign up for a free 30-day trial to use the app. Also, you'll need to have an Adobe ID or use the Sign in with Apple feature in iPadOS.
