Windows Phone 8, the next major release of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, is expected to become official later this year, yet little is known on what to expect from it.

Even so, it appears that Microsoft is hard at work with getting the OS ready for launch in late 2012, and a list of Windows Phone 8 build numbers that supposedly shows that has emerged online on WP7Forum.ru.

Taken from a Windows Phone 7.5 application that was loaded on devices already running the upcoming OS, the list shows build numbers ranging from 8.0.9666 to 8.0.9688.

Apparently, Microsoft is currently testing the platform on devices in the real world, which shows that the official release is nearing.

Rumor has it that Microsoft might have the new mobile platform ready for RTM sometime in July 2012, yet devices powered by it might not emerge until late fall.
