Microsoft is still working to convince developers to port their apps to Windows 8, so the number of Modern tools available in the Store right now is growing up fairly slow.

At this point, the overall app count has exceeded 70,000 according to MetroStore Scanner, an unofficial service that monitors the entries published in the Store.

Of course, many of these apps are available with a freeware license, while the games section remains the one with the biggest number of downloads.

As far as Microsoft is concerned, the total number of apps is expected to grow a bit faster in the coming months, as we get closer to the public debut of Blue, the first major Windows 8 upgrade due this summer.

Microsoft itself is planning to introduce more Metro apps by default in an attempt to show users the advantages of sticking to the new Modern working environment.
