Microsoft is reportedly planning to roll out a major Windows 8 discount for OEMs that’s basically supposed to bring cheaper devices capable of running its newest operating system to the market.

According to a report by Digitimes, this strategy is likely to cut the final price of devices incorporating touchscreen units by approximately 10 percent, while the mainstream models are likely to get more than 20 percent cheaper.

The lack of touchscreen units has been considered one of the main reasons for Windows 8’s disappointing early uptake, with Microsoft blaming manufacturers for not bringing to the market enough devices able to make the most of its new operating system.

Given the fact that touchscreen devices are now supposed to become more affordable, Windows 8 is expected to boost its market share significantly in the following months, as more users would make the move to the new software thanks to this price cut.
