Having one too many people drive their cars to and from work has been shown to cause pollution, so it comes as good news that brainiacs are trying to come up with alternatives to the four-wheelers greenheads often frown upon.

One of these alternatives is the odd personal transport vehicle pictured above, which makes it possible for your average Joe and Jane to walk and bike at the same time.

According to Tree Hugger, the vehicle is dubbed the WBC (that's short for Walking Bicycle Club), and it is the creation of a team of Japanese specialists led by Shuwa Tei, and Kenya Hara.

The WBC, which looks and works much like the love child of an elliptical cross-trainer and a regular bicycle, is intended to make it possible for people to get around at bicycle-speeds while walking.

It is also fitted with an electric motor which can go about 20 kilometers (12 miles) on a single charge and which is supposed to make it easier for cycling pedestrians to go uphill.

The WBC is not yet available for purchase, but word has it that it will go on sale sometime later this year, most likely in October.

If you're thinking about getting one, here is what you should know: the WBC measures about 1.2 meters (4 feet) in length, weighs approximately 36 kilograms (79 pounds), and its price tag will be one of $2,900 (€2,126).
