The new title from Eugen Systems plugs a big gap in strategy gaming

Name your top real-time strategy series and catalog the settings that they use and you will find that most of them deal with the ever popular World War II, older historical periods ranging from Antiquity to the Middle Ages or with some far flung version of the universe.

What the genre lacks is a solid series of games dealing with modern history, allowing players to choose familiar nations and use hardware that they can identify visually as long as they have any familiarity with the armies of the world they live in.

Wargame AirLand Battle is the kind of experience that can fill the void while keeping alternate history lovers and strategy players occupied for many hours.

The Cold War is a fascinating period of history because on the one hand, conventional weaponry was getting ever more sophisticated, both in terms of protection for soldiers and also when it comes to killing power, while nuclear arsenals meant that most leaders were reluctant to engage their enemies.

The team at Eugen Systems aims to answer the fundamental question: How would a conflict between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the Warsaw Pact have played out?

The game allows players to decide who wins by offering complex simulations of most of the important weapons systems from the Era that can be tested in campaign, skirmishes or multiplayer.

It’s hard to compare Wargame with a similar title because the only games set in that period that have been launched lately are turn based and have a more hardcore following.

The game is certainly better than European Escalation, the previous release from the same team, and many players will find it a solid and engaging experience.

World War III (aka the Cold War Gone Hot) will probably never hold the attention of gamers as WW II does, but history and strategy buffs should try Wargame out to see what it has to offer.
