According to a study performed by F5 Networks at the 2013 RSA Conference, most IT security professionals say virtualization, bring-your-own-device (BYOD), and the increasing complexity of threats are the most problematic when it comes to securing an organization.

73% of the 150 respondents named virtualization as a major issue.

The increasing complexity of threats (72%), BYOD (66%), the changes as far as the attackers are concerned (62%), the shift from data center infrastructures to the cloud (61%), and the shift to web-based applications (60%) were also named as having a high impact on security.

When it comes to BYOD, 35% of respondents say their organizations are not ready to handle the threats posed by the new trend, despite the fact that 75% of them admit that the initiative is prevalent in their organization.

45% of them say traditional security solutions are not capable of handling the threats posed by BYOD.

Interestingly, 49% of security experts believe traditional safeguards are inadequate in protecting an organization against insider threats, and the shift to cloud-based infrastructure, while 48% say such measures are not good enough against the increasing complexity of threats.

39% say traditional measures are not efficient against external threats such as spam or malware.

“The security landscape continues to change rapidly and many organizations are struggling to properly address evolving threats,” said Mark Vondemkamp, VP of Product Management for Security at F5.

“Companies will do well to proactively address trends like BYOD and cloud security, but they should also look to raise their game in terms of threat detection and mitigation. With employee behavior, business priorities, and infrastructure demands further expanding traditional threat vectors, the proper tools and procedures are essential in maintaining a healthy level of security.”
