Starting today, the owners of devices running under Research In Motion’s BlackBerry operating system or under Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform can download and install the Viber application on their devices.

Viber is a chat app that allows users to make free calls with their friends and family, as long as they have the software installed on their devices as well.

The service is already quite popular around the world, with over 69 million users taking advantage of what it has to offer.

The Viber app was released in Beta for the BlackBerry and Windows Phone platforms, and is already available for the owners of Android handsets, as well as for iPhone users.

“Viber for BlackBerry Beta and Windows Phone 7 Beta are released today! This milestone lets BlackBerry and WP7 users connect freely with our 69 million Viber users, and is a major step towards the full versions which will have our free HD-voice calling,” the company announced on Facebook.

Through Viber, users can not only make phone calls, but are also able to send text messages to other Viber users over 3G or Wi-Fi.

“When you use Viber, calls and text messages to any other Viber user are free, and the sound quality is much better than a regular call. You can call or text any Viber user, anywhere in the world, for free,” the company notes.

They also add that “all Viber features are 100% FREE and do not require any additional ‘in application’ purchase.”

Although calls are free for Viber users, the application will use the phone’s data connection, and users should keep that in mind when accessing it.

The beta version of the BlackBerry and Windows Phone Viber app can be found available for download via the platforms' official software portals, namely the BlackBerry App World and the Windows Phone Marketplace.
