Capcom has delved into further details about its upcoming DmC Devil May Cry title, confirming that Vergil, the brother of protagonist Dante, would help him in his journey and give his life a new meaning.

DmC Devil May Cry reboots Capcom’s long running hack and slash franchise and fans were surprised to hear that Dante’s brother, Vergil, will also appear in the new title, currently in development at Ninja Theory.

We have already heard a few details about Vergil and his role as the leader of a human resistance movement against the evil demons.

Now, Capcom producer Alex Jones talked with VG247 in depth about Dante’s brother and how a new relationship is forged between them by the upcoming game.

“Vergil made the most sense out of the pantheon of past DmC games. We’re re-telling Dante’s origin, and we’ve changed some stuff in the canon, including Vergil’s relationship with Dante. We don’t want to give away too much about it, but he is Dante’s brother, he’s head of the Order and he’s had his eye on Dante for some time,” he said.

“He’s been waiting for the best time to reveal himself to Dante, suck him into his master plan to fight the demons. The idea was, we wanted anyone who had played a previous Devil May Cry game to not find this an alien experience or a stretch of the imagination.”

What’s more, besides offering Dante the opportunity to exact his payback upon the demons, Vergil also helps him find a goal with his life.

“The story is Dante kind of finding his purpose. He’s on the margins of society at the start and he’s just kind of surviving, and then Vergil finds him. At first, just by offering him an opportunity for revenge, Dante then at least has some sort of a goal,” Jones added.

“As he moves deeper into the story he becomes more connected with the larger struggle it’s about him finding his place in the world. So he starts off in one way and ends up in another. There will be a trajectory he follows that brings him to be a fully-formed person.”

DmC Devil May Cry definitely sounds like an evolution in terms of narrative as opposed to previous games, so it’s going to be interesting to see if it will work come January 15, 2013, when the game is released for PS3 and Xbox 360.
