Unvanquished, a free, open source first-person shooter that combines real-time strategy elements with a futuristic and sci-fi setting, has been promoted to version Alpha 33 and the new iteration is now ready for testing.

The Unvanquished developers have been pushing a lot more updates than usual and it looks like they are really making some good progress with the game. New versions of this title are now less about new features and more about bug fixes and other smaller changes.

This means that they are approaching a more stable release for the game and that users should really start getting excited about the final product.

Unvanquished was forked from Tremulous, which was another free multiplayer shooter. Most of these games disappeared, and just a couple are left right now that are still in development.

This is one of them, and from the looks of it, the devs have managed to put together a much better game than Tremulous ever was. It remains to be seen if they will manage to gather the same crowd of enthusiastic players around their project.

Latest Unvanquished version features three new maps

The developers of Unvanquished want to bring even more content and this goal has been achieved by adding two more maps. They are not the final versions and it will take some time to get them refined, but they should provide new challenges for players.

"For this release, we're including new alpha versions of two new maps, Forlorn and Antares. The maps are currently works in progress, and as usual we'd like to solicit community feedback with regards to how they play. You can play them locally through the /devmap command in console, or you can play against bots or other players on one of our servers. As their designs solidify, they'll continue to receive updates over successive releases. By the time they're done, these two new maps will raise our stock map count to ten!"

"We've also had some work done on particles for this release. Most importantly, we now have support for soft particles, which you can currently see demonstrated by the acid tube, booster, and grenade particle effects," say the makers of Unvanquished.

More details about this amazingly-looking sci-fi title can be found on the official website. Keep in mind that this is a work in progress and players will most likely encounter problems and other issues. You can download Unvanquished Alpha 33 right now from Softpedia.
