It wasn't a major release, but it's still important

The Ubuntu launch date are usually set in stone, but from time to time we might see some of them delayed. The same happened with the Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS release which is delayed for a couple of weeks.

We don't get to write this kind of news about Ubuntu because most of the Ubuntu launches have occurred right on time. It's really rare to see a delay, but they wouldn't have done it unless it was really important. As a matter of fact, the delay happened for Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS, which is the second point release for the latest LTS. It's not a big problem and it's not for a major release.

The Ubuntu devs have their hands full right about now, with the launch of Ubuntu Touch and the upcoming launch of Ubuntu 15.04, so it's not really a surprise that they had to postpone. It was all because of the kernel, but some of the HWE components were a little bit late and they needed to properly integrate and test them.

Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS delayed until February 19

This small delay won't be really felt by the Ubuntu community. It's not like everyone was watching the date in order to be sure the point update lands on time. After all, this is mostly a formality and everyone who keeps the system updated won't have to do anything extra.

"It was fairly obvious to most, I think, that the HWE bits for 14.04.2 landed a bit late to realistically expect anyone to validate them (and, indeed, I still need to clean up some installation oopses on some flavours), so after discussion with many stakeholders and some flavour leads, we've opted to delay the release until Feb 19, giving us two weeks of room to clean up whatever remaining messes we have, get in one or two last fixes, and give people enough time to validate and be confident in what they're shipping," said Adam Conrad on the official mailing list.

We'll keep you apprised with any news about the launch.
