Toshiba Portégé Z20 to compete with Lenovo ThinkPad Helix 2

This weekend we told you the Toshiba Portégé Z20 has just popped up for a visit with the FCC. But even if there wasn't a lot of information inside the documents, we did speculate that the upcoming product would be a convertible running on an Intel Core M processor (from the Broadwell family).

And it appears this is exactly the case. The Toshiba Portégé Z20 just went official revealing the convertible we envisioned a few days ago.

Toshiba Portégé Z20 joins the Broadwell family

The machine comes with a 12.5-inch display, thus offering more space than the previous Toshiba Portégé Z20 Z10t, which took advantage of an 11.6-inch screen.

The standalone tablet weighs 799 g / 1.76 lbs and is 8.8mm / 0.34 inches thick, but snapping the keyboard dock on will get a 1.59kg / 3.5 lbs laptop on your hands.

This is not a lot, but it’s not exactly the lightest Ultrabook in the bunch either. However, consider that the keyboard dock incorporates an extra battery in its midst, so the device’s overall life is set to be of around 16 hours.

The new Portégé Z20 offers a Full HD IPS touch screen, so given that we are offered a little above the average, the machine can be touted as business-friendly.

The convertible takes advantage of a spill-resistant backlit keyboard plus an integrated Accupoint which offers an alternative to the large click pad to provide better accuracy.

Under the hood lies an Intel Core M processor and Toshiba does make a point in saying that the convertible has a fanless design.

Everything onboard is fitted with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. Given that the new 2-in-1 is aiming to be a productive machine, Toshiba is also throwing in an optional pen with Wacom technology for scribbling on the slate.

Other selling points of the device include a micro HDMI port, micro USB and microSD card.

Toshiba Portégé Z20 is a hybrid for professionals

With the keyboard snapped on, users can take advantage of connectivity without needing adapters via the full-sized ports such as RGB, HDMI, GBit Lan and 2 USB 3.0 ports. Additionally, there’s optional 3G/4G and Wi-Fi ac/ a / b / g / n.

Going back to security, the laptop/tablet hybrid takes advantage of Trusted Platform Mobile (TPM) which protects data stored locally, while the Intel Active Management Technology (AMT) allows it to monitor, repair and upgrade these machines remotely. Last but not least, there’s also a Kensington lock.

For the time being, pricing availability hasn't been disclosed yet, but expect to see the machine arrive on the market in Q1 2015.
