Square Enix is continuing its push to conquer the Western gaming market by announcing that it will be releasing Supreme Commander 2, the real time strategy videogame from Gas Powered Games, during the spring of 2010 on the PC and the Xbox 360 home gaming console.

The sequel is set to take place 25 years after the first installment and is set to build on the massive nature of the initial game, but offering a more complex campaign, new units, better tactics on the part of the enemy, and a better online multiplayer. The three factions from the first Supreme Commander will be retained and the player will be in charge of a wider array of tools of destruction which he will need to deploy tactically in order to progress. There will be 18 missions to get through initially in order to solve the mystery of the assassination which has thrown The United Earth Federation, The Illuminate, and the Cybran Nation back into three way war.

Chris Taylor, who is the founder and creative director of Gas Powered Games, has said that “The partnership with Square Enix has been a highlight of my career. I couldn’t be more proud of what the team has accomplished, as the game has continually exceeded all of my expectations throughout its development”.

The first Supreme Commander was widely noted for its scale and for the way units could be upgraded and could quickly influence the balance of power on the battlefield. It was hailed as being a spiritual successor to Total Annihilation, but the huge maps and the big numbers of units which were engaged at any moment made it daunting for some players to actually get into the game. Supreme Commander 2 is set to solve the problems of the original and deliver a more complete experience.
