Sony Mobile is nearing the launch of a new flagship Android-based smartphone, one supposedly set to make an appearance at the MWC 2014 next month as the Xperia Z2, and which might have just received certification in Japan.

The handset is expected to become available for purchase in the country on the network of wireless carrier KDDI, featuring model number PM-0750-BV.

According to Blog of Mobile, the smartphone sports the codename of Xperia Canopus and will hit the market with LTE, WiMAX, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac connectivity packed inside.

Moreover, the mobile phone is said to arrive with a quad-core Snapdragon 800 MSM8974AB processor inside. The upcoming device will run under Android, though the specific version hasn’t been unveiled.

Apparently, KDDI is set to launch the handset as Xperia SOL25, which would naturally come as the successor of Xperia Z1, currently available at the wireless carrier as the SOL23, PhoneArena notes.

The yet unannounced smartphone should pack a screen of at least 5 inches, but the specific size has yet to be unveiled.

Previously, Sony was rumored to plan on launching its Xperia Z2 flagship smartphone at the MWC 2014 show in Barcelona; the device would sport the codename of Sirius.

Chances are that the company is indeed planning on making such a move, but that the handset will pack a series of different capabilities at KDDI, thus featuring a different codename at this wireless carrier.

The one thing that remains to be seen is what exactly the phone will look like, and whether Sony will continue using the Xperia Z design on this year’s smartphones too. A concept design coming from FXtec suggests that it would sport a slimmer body, but it is not an official image, so we’re still in the dark here.

Considering the fact that Sony has already certified the smartphone in Japan, it might not be too long before it makes it official, so stay tuned for more on the matter.
