The coming PlayStation 4 home console is designed to be able to use the PlayStation Vita handheld as a second controller under certain conditions but it requires special programming from the developers, according to Sony.

Shuhei Yoshida, the leader of the Sony Worldwide Studios, writes on his Twitter feed, in response to a question from a fan, that, “In a normal sense, no. Unless a game is specifically programmed to allow such use of PS Vita.”

In the last few months, Sony has said that it plans to make the Vita a second screen device for the PS4, allowing gamers to get access to more information and options for their favorite video game experiences.

The new handheld has sold less than expected and pairing it with the next-gen console might be a way of boosting its overall results.
