MediaTek’s quad-core processor might soon emerge on shelves inside handsets coming from leading mobile phone makers out there, the latest reports on the matter suggest.

Phone makers such as Sony and Motorola are said to plan the launch of such devices, along with LG, Huawei, ZTE and Lenovo.

Just as previous rumors on this suggested, MediaTek’s MT6589 chip is highly appealing to vendors due to its low cost, which would allow them to launch devices at reduced price tags.

Manufactured using the 28nm process, the chipset is clocked in at 1.0GHz-1.2GHz and offers support for L DDR2 memory, 720p screen resolution, and full HD video recording.

While no official announcement on the matter has been made so far, rumor has it that the first devices powered by the processor might be launched in March this year.
