Electronic Arts has formally announced that SimCity will arrive on the Mac on June 11 exclusively as a digital release via Origin. The city building game will be free for everyone who has already bought it on PC.

“SimCity is coming to Mac on June 11 and one purchase will give you both the Mac and PC versions,” EA announced in a press statement.

According to Lucy Bradshaw, senior vice president and general manager of EA’s Maxis Label, “You only need to buy SimCity once to play together across the same servers, regardless of which version you’re playing.”

You can access your cities from across both platforms, and players who have already purchased SimCity as a physical copy will receive the Mac version as a free digital download on Origin.

Lucy Bradshaw also noted that Maxis insisted not to make any compromises as they were coding the Mac version so, instead of delivering a port, the studio created “a native version that is optimized for the hardware and OSX.”

Update: the article has been slightly altered to better reflect the June 11 release date.
