Employs three 333 GB platters

Seeing how Seagate has been smashing the storage barriers with hard disk drives of up to 3TB, Samsung decided it was time to also cater to the needs of the high-capacity storage front, albeit in smaller form factors. As such, it brought out the SpinPoint MT2 line of 2.5-inch hard disk drives, which is composed of, for now, two models, one with 750 GB space and another with 1TB. These HDDs claim to provide a 20% better read/write performance and to consumer 4% less power than competitors.

The SpinPoint MT2 hard disks have a thickness of 12.5 mm, which is more than the so-called standard 9.5 mm that 2.5-inch drives usually boast. The 750 GB drive uses two 333 GB platters, whereas the 1 TB model obviously has three. Said platters spin at 5400 RPM (rotations per minute) and do not produce as much noise as they otherwise would, thanks to the SilenSeek and NoiseGuard technologies. As for actual performance, Samsung implemented the SATA 3.0 Gbps interface and gave its creation 8 MB of buffer memory.

“The new Spinpoint MT2 drive offers the largest capacity in what has previously been offered as an option for portable digital devices,” said I.C. Park vice president, storage marketing, Samsung Electronics. “As the total storage solution provider, Samsung is committed to offering products that features exceptional performance and value across a wide range of computing and consumer electronics markets.”

The Samsung SpinPoint MT2 hard disks are built free of halogen and are meant to be used in mobile PCs and portable storage solutions, such as the Samsung S2 Portable USB-connected HDD. Other advantages include shock resistance levels of 400G (2ms) in operation mode and 800G (1ms) when the power is off. Finally, the overall stability and reliability is optimized through the company's exclusive dynamic balancing technology.
