Nintendo has released a new firmware update for the 3DS handheld, adding folder support to the gaming platform while also introducing a new system which allows for software to be updated selectively.

The Home Screen folder system will allow gamers to include up to 60 items in groups, making it easier to organize the Nintendo 3DS.

The new update feature will also soon be put to good use, with Nintendo set to fix the shortcut exploit that has been present in Mario Kart 7 since launch.

It is not clear whether Nintendo plans to deliver any more firmware updates for the Nintendo 3DS or whether it will only update the software of the handheld when the user base requests a new feature.

The new Nintendo gaming platform has seen slower than expected sales on launch, but has since rebounded, helped by the launch of a number of core titles like Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.
