Developer GameFreak and publisher Nintendo announce that they are planning to launch a new version of the Global Link service on October 12, the day when the new title in the long-running series will be available worldwide.

From the start of that month, Pokemon fans will have to endure a twelve-day-long maintenance period that is meant to make the various game services compatible with X & Y and add new functionality.

In the announcement, translated by NeoGAF, the two companies have not said exactly what services gamers will be able to discover after the October 12 re-launch.

The Global Link is important because millions of Pokemon fans use it in order to trade items and to arrange battles.

Pokemon X & Y will be offered on the Nintendo 3DS handheld and is the first title in the franchise to introduce actual 3D polygonal graphics.
