Apple has been working on its iPhone device since the early 2000s, although the first device was launched only years later.

The device changed over years, and documents that made it online only recently offer a series of details on the transformations it suffered.

Photos of iPhone prototype devices dating back to 2006 are now available, including one that is labeled N90 – which was believed to be the codename of iPhone 4.

The final product looks quite different from these prototypes, but the photos still offer us the possibility to make an idea what designs Apple though of over years.

You can have a look at more of these images in this post over at The Verge, complemented by a series of photos of the various iPad prototypes that Apple has tried.
