Hardware developer Nvidia has announced the launch of a new graphics processing unit technology called GeForce GRID that is specifically designed to reduce the latency seen in streaming video games and could be used to make all future video gaming happen in the cloud rather than on local machines.

Nvidia has partnered with Gaikai, PlayCast and Ubitus and the developers say that the latency for streaming can be pushed down to as low as 10 milliseconds.

Tim Sweeney, the founder and the chief executive officer at Epic Games, has announced that his team supports the new Nvidia tech and that it will aim to optimize their upcoming Unreal Engine 4 to use it.

The new engine will be delivered at the same time as the next generation of home consoles and might push PC gaming further towards streaming solutions and farther away from the physical retail model.

Nvidia is also rumored to be working with both Sony Microsoft on their next-generation devices, which might even include the new GeForce GRID technology.
