Nitrux has presented the Nitrux OS, a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu that will power the NXQ mini ARM PC. It's using a KDE desktop and it's not like anything you might have seen before.

When people hear about a distro based on Ubuntu that uses KDE, they immediately think of Kubuntu. As long as there is Kubuntu around, why would there be the need for anything else? That's not exactly the case, especially since Kubuntu uses a vanilla version of KDE and it's not really customized. That job falls onto the users and most of the time they are happy to do it.

From time to time it's good to try a desktop built by developers and not by users. That way you get to experience a lot more diversity. The same is true for Nitrux OS which doesn't really look like a KDE-powered OS, unless you take a closer look. The fact that they managed to customize it to that extent is really interesting.

Nitrux OS will run on the NXQ mini ARM PC

The Nitrux devs have provided a virtual machine ready image for users to test. That means that you can't install it on your PC, just run the full experience in a virtual machines, like VirtualBox. It works beautifully and it provides users a glimpse on what they would run on an NXQ.

"Nitrux OS is a desktop operating system currently built upon Ubuntu, this means it’s based on a powerful and easy to use platform where we can create a great desktop experience for our users. We use the KDE SC as its default desktop since it provides a quick, responsive desktop environment all magnified by our custom resources from artwork to system tweaks which include performance and security tweaks," reads the official website.

The devs have also integrated Calligra Office, Chromium Web Browser (Tor and DNScrypt enabled, a DNS encription tool, and DuckDuckGo as the default search engine.

On the other hand, NXQ features the Samsung Exynos 4412 processor (a Quad-core 2.0 Ghz CPU with 2 GB of RAM, a Mali 400 MP4 GPU video GPU, 3 x USB 2.0 ports, a micro-USB port, a micro-HDMI, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. The pricing scheme starts from $195 for the NXQ with 8GB of storage and goes up to $295 for the version with 128GB. There are a couple of other versions in the middle.

You can download the Nitrux OS VM image and give it a shot.
