The Wii U is performing worse than expected and it seems that Nintendo wants to increase sales by allowing popular smartphone-based video games to be ported to the home console via a new set of tools that are now offered to developers.

Gamespot is citing anonymous sources that spoke to the Japan Times as saying that a special app has been developed to make it easy to move titles from Android and iOS to the Wii U.

Nintendo is also planning to deliver a new firmware update for the console, during the summer, in order to update the eShop.

The move might help Wii U sales in the long term, but Nintendo needs to make sure that prices for the new slate of video games are lower than they are on mobile devices.

The sources suggest that the company is also creating its own smaller video games for the new service.
