Last year, NVIDIA introduced the Tegra K1 chip which turned out to be a quite powerful and impressive piece of silicone

However, for some reason or another, mobile device makers didn’t flock to implement the new architecture inside their products.

So throughout the year, we've only seen a few tablets arrive with the Tegra K1 on board, including the Nexus 9, Xiaomi MiPad, and a bunch of Chromebook models.

Well, this year at CES 2015, NVIDIA pulled the veil off its newest Tegra X1 chip, an octa-core unit that’s supposed to compete against Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon 810 and Samsung’s Exynos 7420.

The Tegra X1 bundles eight 64-bit cores with 256-core GPU, and NVIDIA has promised the silicon piece will offer twice the performance of last year’s K1.

NVIDIA Tegra X1 pops in AnTuTu

But how does the Tegra X1 stack up against the Snapdragon 810 and Exynos 7420? Does it stand a chance?

Well, it appears that Tegra X1 has been put through AnTuTu, just like the two other high-end chips we have mentioned above. And according to My Drivers, which is providing us with the results, the Tegra X1 managed to score a record 74,997 points.

A few weeks ago we were telling you the Exynos 7420 inside the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge broke the benchmarks, but this week the Tegra X1 seems to claim the title of most powerful piece of octa-core silicon we have seen so far.

In the table below, we compared the AnTuTu scores of the three chips, so that you can get a better idea about the areas where the Tegra X1 excels.

As you can see, NVIDIA’s newest mobile chip hits a whopping 11,295 points in the CPU Integer test, which is almost double compared to what the Exynos 7420 can achieve.

In the 3D performance test, the X1 manages to grab up to 21,093 points, an aspect that indicates the chip comes with 4K resolution support.

It makes sense that the NVIDIA Tegra X1 has made an appearance in benchmarks. After all, rumor has it that next month NVIDIA will unveil the successor of the Shield Tablet, a device that launched last year with a Tegra K1 processor on the inside.

It seems that time has come for a new tablet to come out of NVIDIA, this time with a Tegra X1 on the inside. We can’t wait to see how the new chip performs in real life.
