The NPD Group is releasing its official sales numbers for the month of March in the United States and the PlayStation 4 home console from Sony has once more managed to be the best-selling piece of hardware, ahead of the Xbox One from Microsoft.

The solid performance of the two next-gen devices has managed to increase overall hardware sales for the month by 78 percent when compared to the same period of 2013, to reach 395 million dollars (293 million Euro) in sales.

Liam Callahan, an analyst for the NPD Group, is quoted by GamesIndustry.biz as saying that, “When comparing the first five months of sales for the Xbox One and PS4 to their predecessor's first five months, total Xbox One and PS4 sales are up close to 60 percent.”

Sony has not said exactly how many PlayStation 4 home consoles it has sold, but Microsoft has explained that it delivered 311,000 Xbox One devices to buyers during March.

Analysts expected the launch of Titanfall to have a bigger impact on the market and to make the Microsoft console perform much better.

Nintendo has not yet confirmed sales for its own Wii U and 3DS and older-gen consoles are continuing to see a sharp decline in their own sales, especially as they are no longer supported with many new releases.
