Canonical announced on June 11th, in a security notice, that a new MySQL update for its Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 11.04, Ubuntu 11.10, Ubuntu 12.04 LTS operating systems is now available, fixing a vulnerability and bringing some new features.

According to Canonical, it was discovered that certain builds of MySQL incorrectly handled password authentication on certain platforms, and a remote attacker could use this to authenticate with an arbitrary password and establish a connection.

MySQL was updated to version 5.1.63 in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 11.10. For Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, a fix was backported, and for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, MySQL was updated to version 5.5.24.

In addition to security fixes, the updated MySQL packages contain bugfixes, new features, and possibly incompatible changes.

The issues can be corrected by updating your system and, in general, a standard system update will make all the necessary changes.
