Mexican carrier Nextel and Motorola Mobility have just announced the immediate availability of the new Motorola Trace i867 Smartradio device.

The handset is available for free with a special Trace i867 package worth of 999 pesos (80 USD or 60 EUR). The offer is available until March 31, after which the smartphone’s price tag will probably be upped a bit.

Motorola Trace i867 is no standard Android smartphone, instead the handset is advertised as the perfect communication tool combining Nextel’s radio feature, Google’s mobile platform, and easy access to social networking sites.

With a special Nextel Email account Motorola Trace i867, users will be able to check their email, as well as stay connected to their favorite social networking sites, including Facebook and Twitter.

WhatsApp is included as well, allowing users to stay in touch with anyone regardless of what platform their phones run.

Hardware-wise, Motorola Trace i867 is totally unimpressive. The smartphone is powered by Android platform, though Motorola has yet to mention which version it runs.

In addition, the phone sports a mediocre 3-megapixel rear camera, a 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen display, as well as Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support.

Last but not least, Motorola Trace i867 comes with Nextel’s i-alarm service, which is meant to protect and help users when in an emergency situation that would prevent them from communicating using their radio or phone.

As soon the user presses and keeps pressing the intelligent button on Nextel radio for 4 seconds, the phone will automatically send an email or text messages with preset text to one or more phones.

At Nextel we’re transforming ourselves. Our portfolio of products and services is going through constant innovation. Our main goal is to go on evolving, providing our users with devices and solutions satisfying the various segments’ communications needs, with the value added that no other company can offer - Nextel’s radio feature,” said Carlos Ortega Leal, communications director, Nextel Mexico.
