Competition means that gamers have choices when it comes to the FPS genre

A number of analysts have estimated that despite their claims of tough competition both Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3 have benefited from their close launch dates and the fact that players sought to compare the two games.

Piers Harding-Rolls, who works for Screen Digest, told Eurogamer that the trade-in policies of the various retailers and aggressive promotions have meant that most players were able to pick up both titles and play them, which has resulted in an expansion for the first person shooter market.

Electronic Arts says that Battlefield 3 sold more than five million units during its first week while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 smashed records yet again and moved 6.5 million during its launch day.

Michael Pachter says that the current numbers show that there's no chance for EA to get the FPS crown unless Activision launches a bad game in the future or fails to fix the Elite experience.
