It is available in beta, with support for 512MB devices included

Last week, Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore teased a new personalization option coming soon to Windows Phone 8.1 devices out there, in the form of a lock screen app, and the software is already available for download.

Called Live Lock Screen, the mobile application offers support for all Windows Phone 8.1 devices out there, but it is only in a beta flavor for the time being.

Just as expected, the new mobile software is meant to provide users with new personalization capabilities, this time for the lock screen of their devices.

It will replace the default lock screen, allowing users to choose from 6 different layouts and to add a new, distinctive touch to their handsets.

The best part of the deal is the fact that each of these layouts comes with a revamped design for the time, date, and notifications, while also featuring a unique unlock animation.

Moreover, the application provides users with the possibility to cycle through multiple background images over the course of the day, which will keep their lock screen fresh. There is also the option to get the latest image from Bing each day.

The availability of this application should make a lot of users happy, especially since Microsoft teased it at Build 2014 back in April for the first time but needed almost four months to make it available for download.

On top of that, we should note that the Live Lock Screen beta app was made available with support for smartphones with only 512MB of RAM inside too, despite the fact that it was expected to arrive only on 1GB+ handsets.

Basically, this means that all owners of Lumia 520, Lumia 720, or Lumia 630/635 devices out there can enjoy it right from the start, without waiting for it to be optimized for their low-memory handsets.

One thing that Windows Phone 8.1 users will observe, however, is the fact that the app shows some lag when trying to unlock the device, namely that it takes a bit until the screen turns on after pressing the Power button.

Moving forth, however, users should expect some more improvements to the app, including enhancements that will resolve the aforementioned unlock delay, at least this is what a Tweet coming from Rudy Huyn reveals.

Those of you interested in experiencing the capabilities of the new Live Lock Screen Beta app first-hand should head over to the Windows Phone Store to download and install it. The app is listed as version 1.0.0.0 at the moment.
