Microsoft has publicly hinted that updates for its Surface tablets are expected in the next 12 months, but an analyst with the Topology Research Institute claims that a smaller device is likely to come in Q4.

Maxwell Chang told CRN during a media briefing that Microsoft’s so-called Surface Mini could feature a 7.5 to 8-inch display and a low-power Intel Atom microprocessor that would allow it to compete with Apple’s very own iPad mini.

Focus Taiwan writes that a price tag of $299 (€229) is also very likely, but Microsoft is still talking with “two or three Taiwanese original design manufacturers” for the production of the device.

The new-generation Surface could launch in October, together with the new Windows 8.1 OS update, as the refreshed tablet is very likely to run the RT version of the first Windows 8 overhaul.
