This year's BUILD 2015 developer conference seems to be all about developers, so Microsoft used the conference to introduce the new Visual Studio Code, a cross-platform code editor that will work on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

The new solution will be offered at absolutely no charge and will at first be available as a preview, but Microsoft promised to use feedback from developers to significantly improve it in the coming months.

Visual Studio Code supports a wide array of languages, including JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js and ASP.NET 5, and comes with standard features such as syntax highlighting, keyboard hotkeys for easy coding, bracket matching and snippets.

Microsoft demoed Visual Studio running on Ubuntu and Mac OS X, and Microsoft's Scott Guthrie said that it's all about empowering developers from all platforms to do more. “Empowering people” is Microsoft's new motto these days and it seems to extend to cloud services as well.

“Our mission with Visual Studio is to provide best-in-class tools for all developers,” Guthrie said. “It's not just a simple editor, it has deep insights into what's going on.”

The new Visual Studio Code is already available for anyone to try out using this link, but keep in mind that the service is now being rolled out across the world, so if it's not working, try again in a few minutes.
