Microsoft confirms that Windows Server 2007 is scheduled for market availability in the second half of 2007. That's right, you have read right. Not Windows Server Longhorn, but Windows Server 2007. Microsoft has not made officially public the final name of Windows Server code-name Longhorn yet. Unofficially, if you know where to look over on Microsoft's official website, you will find countless references that will point you in the right direction.

This being said, the rabbit is out of the hat. And in the long tradition of the names full of imagination, style and originality, Windows Server Longhorn will be released as Windows Server 2007. As Bink reported at the end of the past week, a Windows Vista Technical Article for Hosting and Consuming WCF Services, made a clear reference to Windows Server 2007.

Here is the original fragment: "Exploring Your Hosting Options - On the Microsoft .NET platform, you have several types of managed Windows applications that you can create with Microsoft Visual Studio.NET: WinForms applications, Console applications, Windows services, Web applications (ASP.NET) hosted on Internet Information Services (IIS) and WCF services inside IIS 7.0 and WAS on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2007."

Microsoft has since then intervened on the respective article and promptly removed the Windows Server 2007 reference, replacing it with Windows Server code name Longhorn. They were only a little late.

Still, other Microsoft online resources feature content associated with Windows Server 2007, and showcasing the name that Microsoft is still shy in confirming. Currently Windows Server 2007 has reached Beta 3 stage, the first public beta milestone of the product. With Longhorn planned for the second half of this year, the name could actually be changed to Windows Server 2008, although there are other clues focused on Windows Server 2007, such as Course 3938B and the Extreme Networks document.
