Microsoft confirmed in its earnings conference call that it plans to continue rolling out improvements for Windows 8, the company’s number one operating system that’s going to get a major overhaul this summer.

While no specifics have been provided, Peter Klein, the company’s chief financial officer that will leave on June 1, admitted in a statement that there’s still a lot of work to do on Windows 8, hinting that more major improvements could be announced anytime soon.

“We built Windows 8 with touch and mobility at the center of the experience, which positions us well in this new era. However, the transition is complicated, given the size of our hardware and software ecosystem. We still have an immense amount of work to do,” he said.

Windows 8.1, internally codenamed Windows Blue, is in the works right now and should be here by this summer, packing user interface and performance enhancements. 8.1 is expected to be offered for free to all Windows 8 users.
