Nintendo announces that Mario Kart 8 will be launched on the Wii U home console during the spring of 2014, complete with new gameplay options for all fans of the long running series.

The game was delivered during the new Nintendo Direct program, which the company uses to talk directly to its fans about future plans for the Wii U and the 3DS.

Mario Kart 8 will introduce new anti-gravity racing options that allow players to use the walls and ceilings of some tracks in order to get past their opponents.

Mario Kart 8 will also have a new cast of drivers, plucked from all major Nintendo franchises, each of them with their own special abilities and racing advantages.

The game is part of a wider charm offensive from the company, trying to reinvigorate sales of its much troubled Wii U home console.
