Compatibility re-instated with the latest version of Apple’s Snow Leopard

Apple recently released an adjacent update to Mac OS X 10.6.3. Appropriately assigned a 1.1 version number, in order to reflect the small nature of the increment, the software update targets several recently discovered bugs, one security issue reported by a well-known security expert, while delivering a small number of enhancements. Although small, the update is significant for Mac users running Apple’s Snow Leopard operating system.

Many of these Mac users employ system cleanup tools, such as MacPaw’s CleanMyMac, or Maintain’s Cocktail. The latter, available for most versions of Mac OS X, is actually more than a cleaning utility. Described as “a smooth and powerful digital toolset,” the software offers a huge variety of practical features, such as “clean,” “repair” and “optimize.” Version 4.7.3 of the program is out now.

According to those who “Maintain” the software, it addresses an issue in which the system log server (syslogd) may not be properly restarted, a problem where clearing the virtual memory swap files may cause kernel panics on systems running Mac OS X 10.6.3, as well as minor compatibility issues with Mac OS X 10.6.3 (v 1.0 and 1.1) identified in the previous release.

One of Cocktail’s most useful features is the built-in pilot that customers can use to automate actions and schedule weekly optimizations of their computer. Cocktail also permits the use of Apple’s Automator to build customized, flexible workflows, which act as a great complement to the existing pilots that have been built right into Cocktail.

Currently installed on more than 200,000 computers worldwide (or at least so claims Maintain), Cocktail mostly targets private individuals, but it can also be found at large international companies like Puma, and Sony, or such educational institutions as Harvard University, and the University of Texas. Before downloading Cocktail, take the time to read through this last paragraph.
