A brand new report has appeared online claiming that the development of Mafia 3 has been restarted from scratch and that it's now being led by Rod Fergusson, who previously helped produce the Gears of War franchise and last year's BioShock Infinite.

Fans of the Mafia series were surprised to hear last week that franchise developer 2K Czech had been shut down, with 2K confirming that team members were either absorbed into its Brno bureau or went to the U.S. to work alongside an established 2K team.

Now, Superannuation on Twitter has confirmed that 2K Czech's work on Mafia 3 has been disposed of and that the development will start from scratch under the supervision of Rod Fergusson at 2K's newly formed San Francisco division.

The new game will still appear for next-gen platforms but it's unclear when that might happen.
