Lubuntu will run on any PC from the last decade

Lubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) has been officially released and is now available for download. It joins all the other flavors in the Ubuntu family as the lightest operating system of the bunch.

Many Ubuntu fans are usually preoccupied with the regular Ubuntu versions, like Xubuntu or Kubuntu, but there are others available as well and they are equally interesting. Lubuntu is one of them. It uses LXDE for the desktop, which allows users with low-end systems to run the distro just fine. That doesn't mean that people with high-end machines will have any difficulties, just the opposite.

In any case, Lubuntu shares many of the features of the Ubuntu 14.10 base, including the repositories and numerous other packages. Also, if you have an older PC with Windows XP, you will find that Lubuntu has a similar desktop layout and it will outperform Microsoft's dead OS any day of the week.

Lubuntu 14.10 is fast

One of the main characteristics of Lubuntu is the fact that it's fast, even on older computers. Basically, Lubuntu is able to run on anything built in the last decade, and there are very few operating systems out there that can claim the same thing. Users might have to turn to legacy drivers for some of the hardware components, but they should be already available in the repositories.

"Lubuntu is a fast and lightweight operating system. The core of the system is based on Linux and Ubuntu. Lubuntu uses the minimal desktop LXDE, and a selection of light applications. We focus on speed and energy-efficiency. Because of this, Lubuntu has very low hardware requirements. Lubuntu was founded by Mario Behling and is currently mainly developed by Julien Lavergne."

"Lubuntu is a good operating system for many old computers, but not for all of them. Some computers have too little horsepower or memory. A rule of thumb is that the computer should not be more than 10 years old," say the devs.

Just like its Ubuntu base, Lubuntu 14.10 has seen very few important visual modifications, although many packages have been updated under the hood. The theme and the icons have been updated, but the developers are preparing to make the switch to LXQt, a project that is still in the works.

More details about this release can be found in the official announcement. You can download the Lubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) right now from Softpedia. Keep in mind that the Live CD is a hybrid and it can retain the changes made, even after restart.
