Lightworks, a professional non-linear editing solution that's used for mastering videos, has been upgraded to version 12 for all the available platforms – Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

There are very few professional non-linear video and audio editing solutions in the Linux ecosystem, but Lightworks is probably the best you are going to find. There are a couple of other projects that are just now starting to become really interesting, but Lightworks is here now and it's really good.

The developers from EditShare have made some great strides in the last couple of years and they've proven that Linux is a good platform for this kind of applications. It was a difficult road and there still are a few rough edges, but the application runs great on Linux and has a ton of interesting features.

What's new in Lightworks 12

"We are releasing Version 12 on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X! It has been a long road bringing the Mac version of Lightworks to release alongside the Windows and Linux versions. This now gives us a very solid platform to build on for the future. My thanks once again to everyone that has helped in testing and reporting issues found in version 12, you have been instrumental in getting version 12 to release and your feedback has been incredible," say the devs from EditShare on their official forum.

The developers have also explained that they have improved the user interface and the experience should be much smoother, the playback performance is now much better thanks to the new Lightworks Play engine, it's now much easier to export files, a new Colour Correction effect has been added, and 4K support has been introduced for ProRes formats. These are just a few of the improvements found in Lightworks 12

Lightworks might not be a very widely known product, but it has been used for movies like The King's Speech, Mission Impossible, and Pulp Fiction. It provides support for a large number of formats, including some of the most exotic like ProRes, Avid DNxHD, AVC-Intra, DVCPRO HD, RED R3D, DPX, H.264, and XDCAM EX / HD 42.

You can register for Lightworks for Linux and you can download it from Softpedia. Keep in mind that this is a commercial software solution and it has a pricing scheme. Installing it should be fairly easy to do because the devs provide a binary file.
