Today, LiMo Foundation and GNOME Foundation announced the signing of a key partnership aimed at a close collaboration towards innovation in the open source segment. The new agreement is based upon the use of GNOME Mobile software components in the LiMo Platform, namely in Release 2 and Release 3 of the OS.

According to the pair, upon the signing of the agreement, LiMo Foundation becomes a member of GNOME Foundation’s Advisory Board, while the GNOME Foundation will become an Industry Liaison Partner for LiMo Foundation. GNOME, a free-software project, is meant to offer a complete desktop for Linux-based platforms. The solution also includes the development environment needed for the building of applications.

“LiMo has a proud heritage of well established open source technology and is committed to bringing open source innovation to a broad range of commercial products,” said Morgan Gillis, Executive Director of LiMo Foundation. “This close alignment between LiMo and GNOME provides important support for this commitment and will take in an expanding ecosystem of products and services developed by GNOME developers in conjunction with the members of LiMo Foundation.”

It's a common fact that the LiMo Platform is a mobile operating system based on Linux, and that it has been developed via a tight collaboration between mobile industry players using high quality open source technologies. Among these technologies, we can count a series of components coming from GNOME Mobile project, including Glib, GTK+, D-Bus, GStreamer and BlueZ, and others more.

“The objective of GNOME Mobile is to provide a platform for the next stage of client computing. We are committed to bringing the quality and freedom of GNOME to users on mobile platforms,” said Stormy Peters, Executive Director of GNOME Foundation. “We are excited to work with commercial partners like the LiMo Foundation to ensure that GNOME Mobile technologies are available on mobile and connected devices incorporating the LiMo platform.” Additional info on the LiMo Platform can be found here.
