iPhone OS 3.1 jailbreak possible

The people at QuickPWN have posted a tutorial (complete with IPSW file downloads) on how to jailbreak an iPhone under OS 3.1 software. Apparently, the iPhone Dev Team’s redsn0w version 0.8 is still a go for the task. However, Softpedia does not condone jailbreaking the iPhone / iPod touch.

“With the iPhone 3.1 update which was recently released, jailbreakers will need to jailbreak their devices again,” the post in question over at QuickPWN reads. “This update fixes a lot of bugs that were present in the iPhone OS 3.0 firmware, has anti-phising built-in and other cool features.” The post continues with instructions on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1 using redsn0w.

“[...] This tutorial will be using redsn0w version 0.8,” the piece adds. “There is no redsn0w 3.1 out yet, but this worked for me on 1st Generation iPod Touch 3.1. It may not work for iPhone,” the author warns. The report also informs that unlocked iPhone owners looking to keep things as they are should not update to iPhone 3.1, as their baseband will be permanently updated – a point of no return. QuickPWN recommends that unlocked iPhone users wait for the iPhone Dev Team to release the next version of redsn0w, likely coming out this week.

Those looking to jailbreak only must update to version 3.1 of the iPhone OS before doing anything. “After updating, either locate your iPhone 3.1 IPSW file or download it using any of the links below,” the guide continues, also advising users not to use Safari.

Downloads are available for the following files: iPhone1,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw, 241 MB (iPhone first generation); iPhone1,2_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw, 242 MB (iPhone 3G); iPhone2,1_3.1_7C144_Restore.ipsw, 306 MB (iPhone 3GS). Since redsn0w only recognizes iPhone 3.0 firmware, jailbreakers must download iPhone OS 3.0 firmware to feed it to redsn0w.

Softpedia doesn't condone jailbreaking / unlocking the iPhone / iPod touch or any other device. This article has a purely informational purpose and doesn't, in any way, suggest that you should hack your Apple device. Using hacks may render your device unusable, or may reduce the quality of your experience using the respective device. If you choose to download and install jailbreak tools, you will do so at your own risk. Unlocking / jailbreaking your iPhone / iPod touch may violate your warranty or the EULA with Apple and / or your cellular-service provider.
