Publisher Beamdog has announced that Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition is on its way to Android, iOS, Windows PC, Mac and Linux sometime in the near future, and is now available for pre-order for role-playing games enthusiasts all across the world.

The announcement is not entirely surprising, taking into account that Beamdog had already released developer Overhaul Games' Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition at the end of 2012, a remake of the 1998 cult classic PC role-playing game.

The upcoming revised edition of Icewind Dale will come with new spells, new weapons, items and classes, as well as packing together the first game with its expansions and adding some tweaks to the interface and some of the cut content back in.

Icewind Dale was released back in 2000, as a classic Dungeons & Dragons adventure based on the Forgotten Realms campaign from Wizards of the Coast, and is regarded as one of the fundamental set pieces of the role-playing genre.

The Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition FAQ on the newly minted website touts that the game will come with six expanded quests, featuring content cut from the original release of the role-playing title, and will feature both the Heart of Winter and Trials of the Loremaster expansions.

The game will come with cross-platform multiplayer between PC and Mac owners (and presumably more) and will also add a new "Story Mode" difficulty setting that allows players to delve into the game's enthralling storyline without having to worry about those pesky Game Over screens.

Icewind Dale: Enhanced Edition will also pack 122 new spells, carried over from Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, as well as 31 new class and kit combinations and the new half-orc playable race, and 60 brand new items for players to adorn their in-game avatar with.

Icewind Dale 2, however, is not part of the Enhanced Edition package, so we can safely assume that it too will receive the remaster treatment sometime soon, and that Black Isle's Planescape: Torment might also be on the list of upcoming enhanced re-releases.

In case you're nostalgic and/or curious what the upcoming Icewind Dale: Enhanced looks like in action, Beamdog has also provided a nice announcement trailer heavy on gameplay, showing the upped resolution and spruced-up visuals in the game.
