Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation has been long rumored to plan on bringing to the market a new flavor of its HTC Butterfly smartphone, and the device has been already revealed in Japan, under the name of HTC J Butterfly.

This is the successor to last year’s HTC J Butterfly, built on the same design as that of HTC One (M8), but with a series of hardware modifications inside.

The new HTC J Butterfly will arrive on shelves at KDDI in Japan, with model number HTL23 attached to it, and with a waterproof design, featuring an IPX7 rating.

The 2014 HTC J Butterfly features the same outer design and size as the HTC One M8 does, but will arrive on shelves with a different back cover, as it does not feature the same duo-camera setup as the current flagship smartphone does.

The mobile phone was announced with a 5-inch touchscreen display capable of delivering a full HD resolution. It is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor.

Moreover, the new HTC J Butterfly arrives on shelves with 2GB of RAM, while also featuring 32GB of internal memory, and a microSD memory card slot to allow users to add some external storage to it.

On the back, the aforementioned 4-megapixel Duo "UltraPixel" camera on HTC One M8 was replaced with a 13 megapixel "Duo Effect" camera that will provide users with depth-of-field adjustment capabilities.

Moreover, the new mobile phone sports a 5-megapixel camera, which should provide users with an appealing experience when it comes to snapping selfies or making video calls while on the go.

The hardware specifications of this device are also said to include support for 4G networks (LTE-Advanced 150 Mbps connectivity, to be more precise), along with Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth, GPS receiver, and a 2700mAh battery.

The new HTC J Butterfly runs under the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system right from the start, though it also features HTC’s Sense user interface loaded on top.

The smartphone features dual-front speakers as well, but does not include the BoomSound technology present on the HTC One M8, replacing it with two JBL speakers instead.

The one thing that remains to be seen, however, is whether the smartphone will be released outside of Japan as well, and what specs it will feature if that happens.

Given the fact that its predecessor was released on other markets too, albeit under a different name, chances are that the phone will be pushed to more territories in the not-too-distant future, but no confirmation on this has been provided as of now.
