The GNOME-based distribution will be retired

It's with great sadness in our hearts that we write this article to you all, but it appears that in an email to the Foresight Linux's mailinglist, Michael K. Johnson announces the retirement of the distribution.

Foresight Linux was an open-source and free computer operating system based on the Linux kernel and derived from the Specifix Linux distro. It was mainly built around the GNOME desktop environment, and it featured a rolling-release model with rollback functionality.

We have to admit that it was a one of a kind GNU/Linux distribution, and some of you "old schoolers" might remember that, at some point in time, it was a testbed for new releases of the GNOME desktop environment.

Besides the GNOME desktop environment, we remember that there were various Foresight Linux flavors with the more lightweight Xfce and LXDE desktop environments, as well as the Foresight Linux Kids and Foresight Linux Mobile editions.

Goodbye, Foresight Linux, we will miss you!

Today, May 12, is a sad day for all Foresight Linux users, as their favorite distribution will be no more, as the Foresight Linux Council has decided to close shop because of lack of volunteer activity to support the development of the operating system.

"The Foresight Linux Council would like to extend our thanks to the Software Freedom Conservancy, our corporate home, for their support of Foresight Linux and of software freedom generally," says Michael K. Johnson on behalf of the Foresight Linux Council.

"We would also like to thank SAS Institute for providing physical infrastructure and hosting for the past two and a half years, as well as for offering to refresh the infrastructure. This decision to retire Foresight Linux was entirely the council's."

As Foresight Linux distribution was one of a kind, we can't recommend you switching to another operating system. Those of you still running Foresight Linux might consider searching for a similar OS in the very near future, as by the end of May the Foresight Linux's software repositories will be dead too.
