High Voltage Software, Inc. has announced that its sci-fi shooter, called Gyrostarr, should be available for download via the Nintendo Wiiware service starting today, June 23, 2008. The game can be played on the Nintendo Wii and stored on the internal storage space of the console.

The game is set to be a very easy to get into space adventure that allows the player to take control of a space shuttle and shoot down enemies while making sure he aims for the highest score possible. There are also power-ups to be obtained and obstacles to be negotiated. The main selling point for the game is the way the Wii controllers can be used to guide the ship around in the game, with motion tracking providing a degree of controller sensitivity which is not available on any other console or on the PC.

The developers think that the classic space shooter genre really needed an update and the Nintendo Wii proved to be the best platform on which to develop their title because it attracts the kind of gamers that would enjoy a revival of the sci-fi space shooter. The game, which, developers say, "exceeded our expectations", is based on a new proprietary game engine and is set to support up to four players in co-op play.

Eric Nofsinger, who is the Chief Creative Officer of High Voltage Software, stated that "Aside from the visuals, which are gorgeous, there is a lot about Gyrostarr that players will love. As players develop their skills at the game, they will devise strategies to help them make it through all of the levels. Jumping into the game with four players just makes the experience that much better."

The new Wiiware service from Nintendo is proving to be a success on all markets where it was launched, with games like TV Show King and LostWinds getting very positive reviews from critics while being played by millions of Nintendo Wii users.
