Next up in our Softpedia Game of the Year 2014 awards is the best gameplay runner-up – Dragon Age: Inquisition – made by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One platforms around the world.

2014 has been a year filled with big titles launched almost all the time. Sure, there were quite a few disappointments along the way, especially in recent months due to Destiny or Assassin's Creed Unity, but more or less, gamers had lots of reasons for joy when going through their favorite titles.

Among them, one of the best playing experiences has been Dragon Age: Inquisition, the latest grand role-playing game from BioWare and Electronic Arts.

Refined gameplay, better RPG mechanics make Inquisition shine

First up, this is mostly due to the solid third-person action that's been refined extensively over Dragon Age 2, and it has also received lots of improvements from BioWare's other major series, Mass Effect. From the better movement to the fierce combat that works no matter what actual class and specialization your pick. From up close warriors to sneaky dual-wielding rogues, to the long-range mages and bow-wielding rogues, the gameplay of Inquisition feels intense.

What's more, the RPG mechanics, from the inventory to the skill trees, or even the dialog wheel feel great and add to the whole experience. More importantly, BioWare has also nailed the right amount of depth, allowing those who want to customize the behavior of their AI allies plenty of options, while keeping things simple enough for those who just want to experience the story.

Roaming around Thedas is a joy in Inquisition and the sprawling environments feel alive but don't try to overwhelm players with available quests, goals, enemies, or other such things. Unfortunately, it also brings into question some of the things that the game doesn’t exactly do a great job with, such as mounts. You can use horses and other creatures to ride on and explore the environments in a quicker pace, but considering you can't handle slopes all that well and you can't scan the environment in a good manner, you're still better off walking on foot all over the place, especially when they're filled with enemies.

A few glitches relating to broken quests in the story campaign or specific mechanics in the multiplayer also keep Inquisition from reaching the best gameplay award, but even so, it's still a blast to experience BioWare's role-playing game, meaning it more than deserves the best gameplay runner-up award.
