14 DAY TRIAL // Another free voucher scam is making the rounds on Facebook. This time, the scammers are leveraging the name of ASOS, one of UK’s largest online fashion and beauty stores.
Malwarebytes researchers are the ones who first spotted the scam. Potential victims are lured to a fake ASOS website with Facebook posts that read something like, “Claim your Free £250 ASOS Voucher. Only a few left.”
When users click on the links, they’re taken to a website where they’re instructed to share the posts on their Facebook timeline, and add a comment. The site in question is hosted at free500voucher(dot)com/asos(dot)html. At the time of writing, the site is still live.
Of course, there are no free vouchers. Those who complete the steps are taken to a different site where they’re asked to complete a survey or download various applications (Minecraft, Tiny Media Player).
These apps are detected by some antivirus products as potentially unwanted programs (PUPs).
If you’re a victim of this scam, delete all the applications you’ve installed and scan your computer with an updated antivirus product. Also, remember to remove the bogus ASOS post from your Facebook timeline.
