Facebook scammers are at it again. This time, they’re trying to trick users into installing shady applications by promising a video of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson dying while filming a dangerous stunt for the upcoming Fast and Furious 7 movie.

Malwarebytes researchers were the first to warn Facebook users about the scam. The cybercrooks are publishing posts on the social media network to lure potential victims to a fake Facebook page hosted on celebritydaily(dot)pw.

“R. I. P. DWAYNE JOHNSON (1972 - 2014). He died filming a dangerous stunt for FAST & FURIOUS 7. Age Restricted Video.(for 18 years old and above only),” the scam messages read.

On the scammy page, users are instructed to share the “video” on their own timeline before watching it. In reality, there’s no video, probably because The Rock is not dead.

After the bogus posts are shared, users are presented with another page where they’re instructed to install a “Facebook Media Plugin” in order to watch the video.

This so-called media plugin is actually a potentially unwanted program (PUP) detected by Malwarebytes solutions as PUP.Optional.Bandoo.

Facebook users are advised to be on the lookout for such posts. Celebrity death hoaxes are often used as bait for these types of scams.
