Not everybody agrees with FBI's conclusion

A new message has surfaced online, mocking the conclusion the FBI reached in the Sony hack investigation, that the North Korean government was behind the attack.

The post is from someone claiming to be part of the Guardians of Peace group of hackers that infiltrated the network of Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE), stole a large cache of corporate info, and distributed part of it through file sharing websites.

The message could come from anyone

Chances that this message really is from the perpetrators are slim since it was published on Pastebin, a platform that allows anonymous posting, and it does not contain any hint that could probe the identity of the poster.

Titled “Christmas gift to FBI,” the sarcastic message praises the efforts of the Bureau in finding the culprit for the Sony hack and ends with a link to a YouTube video called “You Are An Idiot.”

“The result of investigation by FBI is so excellent that you might have seen what we were doing with your own eyes. We congratulate you success. FBI is the BEST in the world,” the text on Pastebin says. “You will find the gift for FBI at the following address," the message continued, pointing to the video (available below).

Generally, when GoP delivered a communication, they included some proof that they were who they said they were; a link to a new leak with information exfiltrated from Sony was undeniable proof.

However, many other individuals started publishing messages aimed at Sony using the public platform. Since Pastebin allows anonymous posting and does not require registration, it is easy for anyone to relay all sort of details, more or less sensitive in nature.

Anonymous makes threat to Sony Entertainment and its CEO

Others are also not convinced that FBI’s efforts to uncover details about the actors behind the Sony incident led to the correct conclusion.

In another post, addressed to Michael Lynton, Sony Entertainment’s CEO, someone saying they were part of the Anonymous group expressed the same belief. “I would like to inform you that we all know the hacks didn't come from North Korea,” the message reads.

The company’s decision not to release “The Interview” at the date it was scheduled also attracted a threat, to both Sony and Lynton. The Pastebin entry warns that unless the movie is distributed, “we shall carry out as many hacks as we are capable of to both Sony Entertainment, and yourself.”

The current stance of the company regarding the release of the movie has changed and what was supposed to be a total cancellation has turned into just a delay.
